The separately cast base with a buffalo kneeling on a corpse might be originally closed. Yama is the personification of death, but is although punishing bad deeds. He is the counterpart to Manjusri and looks like his wrathful emanation Yamantaka. At the same time he is a powerful protector of the Buddhist doctrine (dharmapala).
