How to bid?

Browse our catalogues

You can browse the catalogues of current auctions on our main page, or via ‘Catalogues & Results’. There you can also find information on upcoming and ongoing online auctions. Before the online auction, you will find a preview catalogue featuring selected highlights.

Personal Bidding

In the auction hall you can follow the event instantly. There you will receive a bidder’s number for bidding in the hall after your registration.

Telephone Bids

On lots with estimates exceeding € 500 you are also able to bid by telephone. We are happy to call you during the auction so you are able to bid on a lot »live« via telephone. To register for the telephone bidding please also use our bid form.

Written Bids

Moreover you can also submit a written bid beforehand, on which the price limit which you are willing to pay for an object is listed. The auctioneer will then try to purchase the object by auction at the price most suitable to you. The stated highest bids (without additional fee) are only utilised until the limit prices are reached or until the hall bidders, respectively other written commissions are outbid.You can either use the bid form, which you send to us signed, or the online catalogue which you can reach via our homepage.

Important information for new clients

Please use in addition to the bidding-form our form Registration for First Time Bidders and send it to us together with a photocopy of your identity card or passport.

The Saleroom

Live Bidding

Via the link you reach The Saleroom. You can participate live and save in the auction, no matter whether you are at home or on your way. Participants may register online up to twenty-four hours prior to the auctions. Thereafter, you may follow the sale in real time from every computer, smartphone or tablet computer, and bid along for items of interest.

You have to initially register at the Saleroom and then connect to the auction.

Please note that there are separate conditions for live bidding.

  • If you are a first bidder you will receive a request for the first-bidder registration and the demand for a copy of your identification card with the confirmation.
  • For the usage of the online service the additional fee raises by 3%.

Online-Only Sales

Step 1: Log in or register

Log in

If you already have an Invaluable account, you are not required to register again. Simply click ‘Log In’ and log in using your Invaluable login credentials.  


Click the ‘Log In’ button in the online catalogue and submit your personal details via the ‘Create a Free Account’ form. VAN HAM requires you to provide your credit card information as bank reference (your credit card will not be charged) as well as your complete billing address. Please note, the password has to be alphanumeric (only letters and numbers, no additional characters).   Accept conditions Read and accept our Terms & Conditions as well as the Terms & Conditions for Online Auctions, then click the ‘Save & Continue’ button to transmit the form.  


Step 2: Admission to bidding

Activate your account

Upon approving your registration, VAN HAM will send you a confirmation email. Click the link provided in the email to activate your VAN HAM account. (Please remember to check your spam folder).

Once the sale starts, you can now access the complete catalogue, detailed lot descriptions, as well as all photographs. During the sale you can always log in or out to the online auction using your credentials.


Step 3: Bidding


You can place bids via the lot description page once the sale starts. Submit the maximum price you are willing to pay to win this lot – your maximum bid. Should you be outbid by another buyer, the platform will automatically raise your bid until reaching your maximum bid. In the case of two identical maximum bids the buyer whose bid came in first wins the lot. Should your maximum bid be outbid, you will receive an email notification so that you may raise your maximum bid. VAN HAM only uses default bidding steps, which you can view via a drop-down box on the lot description page.  

Keep track of your bids

Monitor your bids during the entire auction in order to make sure that you are the highest bidder. Should you be outbid, you will receive an email notification. To increase your bid, click the link provided in the email.  

End of the online auction

The lots in the online auction will expire in 1-minute intervals. Should a bid be placed up to 5 minutes before the expiration, the elapsing time will be increased by five minutes. This only applies to individual lots and has no impact on the lots following. Lots might thus be knocked down out of their numeric order.  

Your successful bids

You will receive an email notification about your successful bids. You can view the status of each particular lot via your account.


Step 4: Payment & Revocation


Shortly after the auction, you will receive an invoice from VAN HAM setting out all costs and applicable charges, details on how to pay, and shipping information.  

Cancellation Rights

You have the right to cancel this contract without provision of the grounds within fourteen days. The cancellation period is 14 days and starts to run as from the date at which you, or a third party, other than the carrier, authorised by you has taken possession of the goods.  Contact Should you have any questions regarding a particular object, our experts will be more than happy to assist you.
