2216 IMPORTANT AND LARGE JAIN ALTAR CHAUBISI. BEDEUTENDER UND GROSSER JAIN ALTAR CHAUBISI. India. Probably 15th/16th c. Heavy copper bronze with residue of gilding. Very beautiful patina from use. In the center a sitting Tirthankara, surrounded by numerous accompanying figures, among them elephants and other sitting Tirthankara. To the sides of his throne, which is supported by two demons, are sitting Devas, further down a standing one. Weight 2514g, height 28.5cm. On the back a longer inscription in Devanagari.
