14 | 15 battle. For an outstanding work by Walter Ophey, entitled “Comet”, bidders from the German market faced a plethora of competitors, and in the end, produced a result of 66,000 euros – a number that quadrupled the work’s estimate of 8,000 euros. Alexej von Jawlensky’s painting “Frühlingswind und Wiesen” went to the European market, confirming the continued demand for works by the artist. An entire collection from Munich of Surrealist works found new enthusiasts from across the country. The auction’s highlight took place early, as it was listed in the first pages of the auction catalogue. Once again, we were entrusted with the sale of an important work by Rudolf Bauer, who was a member of the artist group Der Sturm. The painting “Triangles” boasted an attractive composition and provenance. Captured in a film still taken on the 80th birthday of Solomon Guggenheim and discovered by VAN HAM, the painting hangs behind Guggenheim, Rudolf Bauer, and Hilla von Rebay, of which VAN HAM also successfully sold an outstanding painting. We are thrilled to have set three world records for Rudolf Bauer at past auctions. Following these successes, the Bauer work in the spring sale met expectations and was sold within the estimate. Overall, the spring sale’s concentrated, high-quality offerings were warmly accepted and demonstrate that collectors discovered and enlivened many new prospects.
