The collecting interest in Old Master works is currently developing in two directions. The first tends toward an increasing interest in rare works of the early nineteenth century, such as pieces by the Nazarenes and the German Romantics. The second line of interest points toward late Impressionist works from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The successful sales of art by Sterl, Guillaumin, and Daubigny document this popularity. VAN HAM’s spring sale met these various collecting interests with an interesting spectrum of key representations from several different schools of painting. One outstanding work to be mentioned is the romantic view of Venice by night, painted by Friedrich Nerly. His work “View towards Santa Maria della Salute“ achieved an outstanding 87,500 euros. The work “A Jolly carriage ride in summer“ by the Polish painter Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski went to a new owner for 35,00 euros. The painting „At the banks of the Oise“ by Charles Francois Daubigny, a member of the Barbizon School, attracted an international audience and climbed from an estimate of 2,000 euros to an outstanding result of 60,000 euros. Finally, the so-called “forgotten Impressionist”, Armand Guillaumin, drew the attention of art 18 | 19 enthusiasts in Cologne. His intensively colorful work “Les Bréjots, premiers jours de mai, le matin” from 1917 was sold for 75,000 euros.
