The Rediscovery of Polish Art The diverse range of Polish art presented this spring thrilled bidding audiences at VAM HAM. Since many nineteenth-century Polish artists studied at German art academies, particular those in Munich and Düsseldorf, several of their works entered German collections. More Polish artworks appeared in Germany in the 1960s as immigration from Poland increased. The appreciation of Polish art with motifs of pastoral scenes has also grown in the last decade. All this surely contributed to the outstanding prices achieved for Polish art at VAM HAM. Of particular note is Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski’s “Jolly carriage ride in summer”, which sold for 35,000 euros. Three of the five works by Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski (1849 – 1915) Jolly carriage ride in summer Oil on Canvas | 48 x 61.7 cm Estimate: € 22,000 Result: € 35,000 Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski (1849 – 1915) Carriage ride in a winter landscape Oil on Canvas | 44 x 58 cm Estimate: € 22,000 Result: € 27,500 Wierusz-Kowalski returned to Polish collections with their sale.
