The online auction is dedicated to one of the most important art scenes that formed in Germany from the 1960s onwards and, with around 100 works by German post-war artists, is able to capture the spirit and mood that prevailed in the art metropolises of Cologne and Düsseldorf. Even today, the Rhineland is still an important location for art, thanks in part to the Düsseldorf Art Academy.

In Germany, the Rhineland in general - Cologne and Düsseldorf in particular - played an important role in the art market from the mid-1960s onwards. A circle of important artists formed at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, including Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, Franz Erhard Walter, Günther Uecker and Heinz Mack. Some of the movements that emerged here differed drastically from the abstract expressionist movement that was developing in America at the same time. Pop Art spilled over into Germany and the term Capitalist Realism was coined.
Galleries also became increasingly important at this time, informing and (commercially) communicating contemporary art through important exhibitions and events. In 1967, the Cologne Art Market, the forerunner of today's Art Cologne, was established in Cologne as an attraction for a local and international audience, providing an overview of the entire current art scene and at the same time offering the opportunity to buy on the spot.

From the 1980s onwards, the Neue Wilde celebrated their breakthrough in Cologne. The Mülheimer Freiheit group of artists included Pieter Bömmels, Hans-Peter Adamski and Jiri Georg Dokoupil. In Düsseldorf, Bernd and Hilla Becher's students, including Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer and Thomas Struth, wrote art history with the Düsseldorf School of Photography from the 1990s onwards. The reputation of the Düsseldorf Academy continues to this day, bringing contemporary artists such as Karin Kneffel and Sabrina Fritsch to the art market.
Discover a diverse program of events with local but internationally renowned artists.
