A couple of peacocks standing on a rock, next to light pink and white blossoming peonies. The decorative painting of the Kanô school was popular in the Edo period. Peacocks are in Japan not native, but were an exotic import. They are a symbol for compassionate watchfulness and are associated with the Bodhisattva Kannon. Inside: Tsuchinoe-ne chûshû Shûsei daisen (1828, middle of autumn/ 8th lunar month, inscription from Shûsei). Sign.: Baiitsu. Seal: unread. Mounted as a hanging scroll. Condition A/B.
