Boxwood, very delicately carved and engraved, darkly patinated with light rubbed off parts, the eyes inlaid with black horn. Large turtle crawling between a large, rotten lotus leaf, which partly surrounds it, and on which two young turtles are crawling up on both sides. W.4.4cm. Condition A. Buchsbaum, fein geschnitzt und graviert, teils dunkel eingefärbt, die Augen des Oktopus aus schwarzem Horn. Der Oktopus, angetan mit einem Jäckchen, mit der Spitze eines Fangarms - Geste, die Nachdenklichkeit suggerieren soll - seinen Kopf kratzend, während ein neugieriges Äffchen, sitzend auf einem zusammengerollten Fangarm von der drohenden Gefahr offenbar nichts ahnt. Laut Volker sollte der Oktopus für den ‚King of the sea‘ die Leber eines Affen besorgen. H.3,9cm. Zustand A/B. Kratzspur. Provenienz: -Alte Sammlungs-Nr. 344. NETSUKE: OCTOPUS WITH LITTLE MONKEY. Japan. Edo period. 19th century. Boxwood, delicately carved and engraved, partly darkly stained, the eyes of the octopus made of black horn. The octopus wearing a little jacket, scratching its head with the tip of one of its tentacles - a gesture suggesting thoughtfulness -, while a curious little monkey, sitting on a rolled-up tentacle, seems to suspect nothing of the imminent danger. According to Volker the octopus was supposed to bring a monkey’s liver to the ‘King of the sea’. H.3.9cm. Condition A/B. Scratch mark.
