MANJÛ: THUNDER GOD RAIDEN. Japan. Edo period. 1st half of the 19th century. Ivory. Bipartite, round. On the upper side in delicately detailed relief with soft transitions, Raiden, the god of thunder, dressed only in a loincloth, in animated dance pose above clouds in front of his circle of drums; the drumsticks in his hands. Verso the horrified landlord is crawling, dressed only in fundoshi and covering his ears, under a curtain next to which an incense stick is burning. Ø 4.2cm. In sehr feinem Relief weibliche Form des Bodhisattva Fugen Bosatsu sitzend vor dem Elefanten mit der Rolle mit den heiligen Schriften in den Händen. Sie trägt ein reich mit Päonien und Wolken geschmücktes Gewand in delikater, teils rot gehöhter Gravur. Auf der Rückseite, ebenfalls fein graviert, ein Dai-Tischchen mit Shishi. Ø 4cm. Round, bipartite. In very delicate relief the female form of Bodhisattva Fugen Bosatsu in front of the elephant, holding the scroll with the sacred Scriptures. She is wearing a garment richly decorated with peonies and clouds in delicate, partly elevated red engraving. Verso, likewise delicately engraved, a small Dai table with Shishi. Ø 4cm.
