The Aesthetics of Photography
VAN HAM has once again been commissioned to auction an outstanding and comprehensive collection: the photography collection from the Anne Maria Jagdfeld Collection. This complete photography collection comprises a total of around 900 works—selected with a keen sense of aesthetics by the renowned collector and interior designer. Around 50 photographs will be offered at the LIVE auction on December 4, 2025, with the remaining items expected to be offered in three online-only auctions starting in early 2026. With the auction “The Anne Maria Jagdfeld Collection – The Aesthetics of Photography,” the Cologne-based auction house VAN HAM once again confirms its outstanding position in the marketing of important art collections in Germany.
“As a Cologne-based auction house, we are greatly honored to have been entrusted with this large Berlin-based photography collection. The collection was assembled with a keen sense of aesthetics and reflects the inspiring personality and unmistakable style of Anne Maria Jagdfeld,” says Markus Eisenbeis, owner of VAN HAM.
Anne Maria Jagdfeld's photography collection comprises works from the late 19th century to the late 20th century. The majority of the collection consists of black-and-white photographs: iconic works of photography are complemented by pieces that stand out for their unique aesthetic qualities. Thematically, the collection reflects the life of the collector: Anne Maria Jagdfeld's keen interest in fashion is evident in numerous iconic works of fashion photography, including works by Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn, and Horst P. Horst. On her many travels, the collector has been inspired by other countries and cultures for her hotel projects, so that the theme of travel has also found its way into her collection. Another focus of the collection is portraits of well-known personalities from the worlds of art, film, and music—reflecting a keen interest in contemporary aesthetics and iconic staging.
"My name is more commonly associated with the comprehensive collection of contemporary Chinese art that can be seen at the China Club Berlin, among other places. My photography collection, on the other hand, is hardly known to the public. I started collecting photographs very early on, and they have accompanied me mainly in my private rooms. In the meantime, I have completed this part of my collection for myself. I am delighted to have found a reliable and competent partner in Van HVAN HAM am for the marketing of my photo collection and am confident that other photography enthusiasts will now give it a worthy home," says Anne Maria Jagdfeld.
Philipp Württemberg Art Advisory was consulted as an advisor in awarding the contract. Philipp Württemberg says: “Anne Maria Jagdfeld's photography collection is impressive in terms of its aesthetics and quality, as well as its scope. The choice fell on VAN HAM´s tailor-made auction program, which offers a broad audience of collectors of all generations and financial backgrounds the opportunity to develop and expand their individual collection focuses.”
