Das opalartige Schillern dieser Ammoniten aus Alberta, Kanada, wird als Ammolith bezeichnet und hat seit 1981 den Status eines Schmucksteins. Die schimmernden, metallischen Farben entstanden durch die Kombination von Jahrmillionen der Verdichtung und der Mineralisierung von Eisen, Kupfer und Kieselsäure, die aus vulkanischer Asche ausfielen.
