The German sculptor Waldemar Otto (1929-2020) is exemplary for the further development of figurative sculpture in the post-war period.
In his exploration of form and figure in view of the importance of volume, Otto developed an individual visual language. Based on the formal possibilities of bronze casting, his work is a constant preoccupation with human existence under the influence of biblical, mythological and socio-critical themes. His oeuvre mainly comprises works in bronze, including a large number of outdoor sculptures. Originally from Silesia, the family fled to Germany in 1945 and Otto began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin in 1948.
In 1952, under the direction of Karl Hofer, he joined the class of Alexander Gonda, whose master student he became. Here Otto was also influenced by Bernhard Heiliger, Gustav Seitz and Renée Sintenis. In 1957 he received the prize of the Great Berlin Art Exhibition and in 1960 the Berlin Art Prize "Young Generation". A DAAD scholarship took him to Florence in 1954, and in 1963 he became an artist in residence at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA, for two years. In 1973 he was appointed to the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Bremen and subsequently moved to Worpswede in 1976, where he lived and worked until his death in 2020. Major solo exhibitions include 1997 at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and 2000 at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Santiago de Chile. His works can be found in public spaces in Bremen, Berlin, Hamburg and Hanover, among others.
