The auction “Ways of Seeing Abstraction” focuses on works of modern and contemporary art whose pictorial content breaks away from the object-oriented approach of earlier centuries. By removing and abandoning the representational, the artists achieve a detachment from naturalistic, reality-based representation. Only shapes, colors, lines, and contrasts are declared as the content of the images. The goal is to alienate the viewer to the point of unrecognizability. Absolute painting, as abstract painting is sometimes called, allows artists greater freedom in expressing their innermost feelings and represents a form of expression far removed from guidelines and motif specifications. The origins of abstraction lie in the first decade of the 20th century. Even in the recent past, abstraction has been an important means of expression for contemporary artists. The online auction features 130 lots, whose variety reflects the diverse ways in which artists of the 20th and 21st centuries have approached abstraction.
