Amerikanischer Konzeptkünstler, Autor. Ausbildung: 1955-62 Toledo Museum School of Design; 1963-64 Cleveland Art Institute; 1965-67 School of Visual Arts, New York; 1971-72 New School for Social Research, ebenda. Begründer des Museum of Normal Art, New York, als Ausstellungsort für Konzeptkunst, zu deren Initial One and Three Chairs, 1965, zählt. Hier stellt er die großformatige Fotografie eines Stuhles, einen Stuhl und die lexikografische Definition zu Stuhl in einem geschlossenen System dar und ergründet damit das Verhältnis von Begriff und Realität, die selbstreferenzielle Bedeutung von Sprache und gleichzeitig die Beziehung von Kunst und Kunstkritik, ein thematischer Komplex, der das gesamte Werk prägt.
