Parallel to our Fine Art auction, VAN HAM offers further works by Robert Sterl in an ONLINE ONLY auction.
All these additional works, which can only be bid for online, are also on display during the preview.

Robert Sterl has recently received a great deal of attention through exhibitions in Dresden and Chemnitz, Passau and Heidelberg and last but not least in 2011 with the publication of Kristina Popova's catalogue raisonné. With his colourful Hessian landscapes, characteristic portraits of musicians and his intensely observed stone-breakers, he is one of the most interesting representatives of German Impressionism. His masterly work stands alongside his contemporaries of the Impressionists Liebermann, Corinth and Slevogt and last but not least Meunier. With the advent of open-air painting, in which artists left their studios and captured their impressions directly on canvas outdoors, a colourful painting with new motifs and vivid picture details emerged, especially in France. In Germany there was a great interpreter of this view in Max Liebermann, who gradually led the academic image of nature, still influenced by the Nazarenes, from darker tones to fresh, light painting.

Sterl's work convinces with its authentic presentation, its freshness of colour and power. Connected with this is, as it were, his invention, or rather: finding new motifs, such as the conductor's portrait or the stone-breaker. Due to his realistic, later also expressionistic traits, his oeuvre cannot be grasped by everyone within the framework of a defined art movement as Impressionism.
