Joseph Beuys celebrates his birthday this year and VAN HAM of course celebrates with him. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary, VAN HAM is organizing a special auction. Consignments will be accepted until May 10.
The online auction offers an exciting insight into Beuys' complex idea of making multiples affordable for everyone and bringing them closer to a large number of interested people in the spirit of democratic art.
Multiples occupy a central place in the oeuvre of Joseph Beuys. Like hardly any other artist of his generation, Beuys worked intensively with the multiple over a long period of time. From 1965 until his death in 1986, he created more than 500 multiplied objects and works on paper, always with the collaboration of editors and fellow artists.
In comparison to the post-war artists of his time, Beuys does not use simple, already prefabricated things or printed matter. Rather, he explores a wide variety of media and formats. In his early multiples in particular, he combines handmade items with found objects, thus emphasizing the sculptural element and at the same time the unique character of each specimen. In his later multiples, to which he often adds artifacts of his action art, he emphasizes the individuality through his signature, written texts and signs as well as hand-set stamps.
