ZERO

The zero point as a new beginning

ZERO refers to one of the most influential artistic movements of the post-war period. Founded in 1957 by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene and expanded shortly thereafter by Günther Uecker, ZERO stood for a conscious break with the informal gestures of pre-war and post-war art. Light, movement, space, and serial structures became central design elements and opened up new avenues beyond the traditional panel painting.

The artists of the ZERO movement developed independent, internationally influential positions: Heinz Mack with his light reliefs and kinetic sculptures, Günther Uecker with his iconic nail works and expansive environments, and Otto Piene with his light, fire, and air works. The circle was complemented by other important artists such as Otto Boll, Adolf Luther, Almir Mavignier, and Hermann Goepfert, who made ZERO a multifaceted and enduringly influential movement.

Today, works by ZERO artists are among the most sought-after positions in German postwar art. Their formal clarity, experimental power, and art-historical significance have attracted an international following of collectors.
